Who qualifies

Since 2011, anyone who can show descent from a Hungarian citizen — with no generation limit — can apply for simplified naturalisation. Crucially, ancestors from the pre-Trianon Kingdom of Hungary count: families from today's Slovakia, Transylvania (Romania), Vojvodina (Serbia), Transcarpathia (Ukraine), and parts of Croatia, Slovenia and Austria are all potentially in scope. There's no residency requirement.

The language requirement

The decisive condition: you must hold a conversation in Hungarian at your application interview. There's no formal certificate or exam level, but officials genuinely converse with you. If you don't speak Hungarian yet, your ancestry may well qualify — the realistic next step is language study, and many applicants reach a workable conversational level within a year or two. Notoriously difficult, undeniably doable.

• Your ancestor's Hungarian birth, baptismal or marriage records — church registers from pre-Trianon territories are widely accepted
• Birth and marriage certificates linking each generation down to you
• Certified Hungarian translations of foreign documents
• A completed application with your family history, submitted at a Hungarian consulate
